Here I am, trying to install Gentoo for the first time ever.
I went through the instructions exactly as they are presented in gentoo.org's online installation handbook. The last thing I did so far was run emerge sync. That was about 14 hours ago. The damn thing is still listing packages, one at a time, at a very steady rate of about one per second. I'm not sure what to expect since this is the first time I've installed it. It seems suspicious to me for the thing to be taking so long and also be moving at this super steady rate. On top of that, they all say 0.00kB/s 0:00:00 next to them, which seems kind of odd.
I'll probably find out if everything is going the way it's supposed to before anyone replies to this post, but go ahead anyway. :)

Re: Gentoo Installation
Sun, January 25, 2004 - 9:12 AMThat's clearly not the way it's supposed to go. I've installed
Gentoo a bunch of times and never seen anything like this. Is you rnetwork connection reliable? What kind of hardware are you installing onto? Have you tried the help forums at gentoo.org?
Probably more likely to get useful responses there, there are a lot more gentoo-savvy people there. -

Re: Gentoo Installation
Sun, January 25, 2004 - 11:53 AMHere is my computer:
Abit IC7MAX-3
Intel P4 3.0 Ghz w/ Hyperthreading
1Gig PC3200 DDR
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256meg
Sony 52/24/52 CD-RW
Sony 16x DVD-ROM
TDK 8x DVD-RW/DVD+RW
I let the emerge sync run for 24 hours, not knowing what to expect. I happened to be watching the installation when it kicked out a timeout error, then started over. Upon reconnecting to whatever mirror I had been using (or maybe it selected a different one, I don't know), the emerge sync continued at a MUCH faster rate than before, and completed in about 15 minutes. -

Re: Gentoo Installation
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 11:40 PMSometime the rsync server that you hit (completely at random) will be slow. It's ok to kill it and try another one. If you emerge gentoolkit there is a utility call mirrorselect that will let you do this.
But you probably already figured that out. :) -
