Hello, all ...

It's been months since i've updated my Gentoo machine (like my Debian box, it just runs and runs ...). However, I tried this morning and get this:

jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $ sudo emerge --update --deep world

[ebuild N ] app-admin/apache-tools-2.2.8 USE="ssl"
[ebuild U ] dev-libs/boost-1.34.1-r2 [1.33.1] USE="-icu% -tools%"
[ebuild N ] dev-util/boost-build-1.34.1 USE="python"
[blocks B ] <dev-libs/boost-1.34.0 (is blocking dev-util/boost-build-1.34.1)
[blocks B ] sys-apps/pam-login (is blocking sys-apps/shadow-4.0.18.2)
[blocks B     ] >=sys-apps/shadow-4.0.14-r2 (is blocking sys-apps/pam-login-4.0.14)

* Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
* installed at the same time on the same system.

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

... so, I try to remove boost, but ...

jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $ sudo emerge --unmerge boost*

--- Couldn't find 'boost_1_34_0' to unmerge.

--- Couldn't find 'boost_1_34_0.tar.gz' to unmerge.

>>> No packages selected for removal by unmerge

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I should do here? Yes, I use Boost, but I don't mind unmerging it for a bit ... i'm mainly interested in getting the emerge --update --deep world to complete right now.

Regards,
... trying to mount HFS+ volumes under Gentoo

Hello, all ...

I just procurred a new box with Gentoo on it, and I want to mount remote HFS+ partitions (from Macs running Mac OSX on the LAN). I'm trying to add HFS+ support to the kernel (currently 2.6.15) but i'm not having much success. I run "make menuconfig", choose HFS and HFS+ support, then exit / save / make / make install, then reboot ... but when I cat /proc/filesystems, I still don't see HFS+ support included.

The funny thing is that the new kernel does have it included, if the output of "make" is any indication (e.g. the first 2 LD lines):

pugspoo linux # make
In order to use the new kernel image you have just installed, you
will need to reboot the machine. First, however, you will need to
either make a bootable floppy diskette, re-run LILO, or have GRUB
installed.

Checking for ELILO...No

GRUB is installed. To automatically switch to new kernels, point your
default entry in menu.lst to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-gentoo-r5

There is no menu.lst on this machine, and i'm under the impression that simply restarting after "make install" will initiate the new kernel ... is this incorrect?

Regards,
Gentoo and Howl?

Hello, all ...

My home network consists of two Macs (a dual 2ghz G5 and a 1.5ghz 12" PowerBook G4) as well as a mini-ITX x86 box running Gentoo Linux. I've set up Howl on the Gentoo machine so that my Macs can find it easily, and this works really well. However, i'd like to be able to have my Gentoo machine also find my Macs ... but this doesn't seem to work. An example:

(machines: the G5 is "pugs", the PowerBook is "pugsleybutt" and the Gentoo machine is "pugspoo" -- yes, I name all of my computers after my dog in some way <smile>)

... from my PowerBook:

PugsleyButt:~ jmzorko$ ping pugspoo.local
PING pugspoo.local (10.0.1.3): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.993 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=2.722 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=1.192 ms
^C
--- pugspoo.local ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.993/1.484/2.722/0.719 ms
PugsleyButt:~ jmzorko$

... from my G5:

pugs:~ jmzorko$ ping pugspoo.local
PING pugspoo.local (10.0.1.3): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.834 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.199 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=1.209 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.3: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=1.271 ms
^C
--- pugspoo.local ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 1.199/1.378/1.834 ms
pugs:~ jmzorko$

... from the Gentoo machine:

jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $ ping pugs.local
ping: unknown host pugs.local
jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $ ping pugsleybutt.local
ping: unknown host pugsleybutt.local
jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $

The Macs can ping each other as well as the Gentoo machine, but the Gentoo machine can't ping the Macs by their hostname. The nifd and mDNSResponder daemons are set to run on bootup on the Gentoo box. I'm thinking i've only done half of the work needed to get everyone happily talking ... has anyone else set up their Gentoo box to live happily on a network full of Macs using Bonjour / Howl? What am I doing wrong / not doing?

Regards,
... trying to set up CVS server on Gentoo

Hello, all ...

I'm trying to set up a CVS server on my Gentoo box, and i'm having a few difficulties. I followed the instructions on this wiki:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_CVS_Server

... but they seem to be incorrect (under Apply Correct Permissions, there is a line that says "# chmod -R 775 /var/lib/cvsd/var", but there is no var directory under /var/lib/cvsd on my Gentoo box).

Anyway, I made a change to /etc/cvsd/cvsd.conf (enabled a repository), but now when I try to restart cvsd, I get this:

jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/cvsd restart
* Stopping cvsd ...                                                                                       [ !! ]
jmzorko@pugspoo ~ $

... and I don't see anything in /var/log/messages, or /var/log/much-of-anything, or dmesg, that would give me a clue as to why cvsd won't stop (it is running).

Any help would be appreciated -- i've loads of C++ and Perl code (that runs on Mac OSX as well as Linux) that wants to be centrally managed :-)

Regards,

Hey guys. I've been loving Gentoo long time now, but something weird has been happening this week and I'm wondering if anyone has any clues. I listen to a lot of audio, and I like to play Flash sites and stuff like that. Lately, audio has been giving me strangeness. So for instance, XMMS works fine for streaming/ogg/mp3, but RealPlayer doesn't. Xine/Totem can play movies fine, but Flash movies get no sound as well.

Any idears what might be causing this? I'm using ~x86, and this only started happening this week.

Thanks!

Gentoo Installation

Here I am, trying to install Gentoo for the first time ever.

I went through the instructions exactly as they are presented in gentoo.org's online installation handbook. The last thing I did so far was run emerge sync. That was about 14 hours ago. The damn thing is still listing packages, one at a time, at a very steady rate of about one per second. I'm not sure what to expect since this is the first time I've installed it. It seems suspicious to me for the thing to be taking so long and also be moving at this super steady rate. On top of that, they all say 0.00kB/s 0:00:00 next to them, which seems kind of odd.

I'll probably find out if everything is going the way it's supposed to before anyone replies to this post, but go ahead anyway. :)

to find code snippets easily. It contains over 100M
loc of c/c++ code. The search is syntax aware, so you
can easily find method calls and class definitions,
etc. I'd like to hear some feedback.

Our web site is at http://www.codase.com.

I run it on a personal server on the Internet, I run one for a firewall and I run it at home. I wish I could run it at work.

So tell us, how many Gentoo boxes you run?

adobe issues

I probably just need to upgrade (which is the plan real soon - stealing tomalok's old dual athlon) but I thought I would check to see if anyone else has issues with adobe acrobat 5 - it kinda keeps crashing stuff and using all my cpu which is very annoying...it mostly happens when I have firefox open...they don't seem to play well together. For example, I'll be browsing and come across a pdf file, click on it which will load adobe, and then usually end up having to kill adobe in order to be able to do anything else on my box.

and If I use gnome pdf viewer to read pdf files, it sometimes doesn't read to the bottem of the file.

so - yes an upgrade will happen cos it probably is my cpu speed, but i just thought i'd ask..

and i'll shut up now.

many thanks
Meka Chu

Is there any sort of gentoo convention? Perhaps a Gentoo convention at Linux World. Random ideas welcome.

So what arch haven't you built?

So far, I've built Alpha (that EV5 was a bitch), x86, amd64, ppc (g4)
stopped 1/2 way through HPPA build when I found the fluid
modeling appication that was bought only ran on HP-UX.
it wasn't for me directly, so wasn;t gonna even try and port it :-(

Been meaning on trying to get the embedded build
on to my Zaurus, but i hate to brick it now that I finally
have it tweaked the way i wanted it...

anyone? have Gentoo running on a toaster yet? :-)

Query Package Info

I'm loving gentoo but there's two things I cant figure out how to do that were easy on RH/Fedora

1) list all files installed by a package

rpm -ql apache2

2) find out what package owns a file

rpm -qf /usr/sbin/apache2
